How heated paver driveways work

A radiant heating element — either electric mat or hydronic PEX tubing — installs directly in the 1" bedding sand layer below the pavers. When sensors detect snow or temperatures approaching freezing, the system warms the bedding layer, transferring heat through the paver surface and melting accumulation before it accumulates.

Electric vs hydronic — which to choose

Electric systems: lower upfront ($15–$18/sqft installed), zero maintenance, ideal for driveways under 800 sqft. Higher operating cost during heavy snow events. Hydronic systems: higher upfront ($20–$25/sqft installed), require a boiler or tie-in to existing home heat, significantly lower operating cost. Specified for estate driveways over 1,200 sqft where annual energy savings recover the install premium within 5–7 winters.

Why no other LI contractor offers this

Heated paver driveways require coordinated trades — paver installation, electrical or plumbing, and a control system. Most LI paver contractors subcontract the heat work or refer it out entirely. We design the heat layout and the paver pattern as one integrated install, which means tighter sensor placement, no cold spots, and a single contractor on the warranty.

Best for these Long Island towns

Old Westbury, Brookville, Oyster Bay Cove, Manhasset, Sands Point, Lloyd Harbor, Cold Spring Harbor, Mill Neck. These are estate markets where the driveway is steep, long, or shaded — and where the cost of being snowed in or paying for plow service over a 20-year period exceeds the radiant install premium.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a heated paver driveway cost on Long Island?
Radiant heat under pavers adds $15–$25 per square foot to a standard paver driveway. For a 600 sqft two-car driveway that's an additional $9,000–$15,000 on top of the paver install.
Electric or hydronic — which is better for LI?
Electric is faster to install and ideal for smaller driveways under 800 sqft. Hydronic (boiler-fed glycol loops) costs more upfront but is significantly cheaper to run on large Gold Coast driveways over 1,200 sqft.
Does heated driveway work with snow?
Yes — radiant systems are designed for snow-melt. Sensors detect snow or ice and activate the system automatically, typically melting accumulation within 30–60 minutes and preventing ice buildup overnight.
Can you retrofit heat under an existing paver driveway?
Only by removing and reinstalling the pavers. The heat element installs in the bedding sand layer directly under the pavers, so the driveway must be lifted. Most clients combine heat retrofit with a full repaving project.
